Mrs. Nancy Upton, Chair - Area 7
With a successful music career launched at Wren High School, Mrs. Upton pursued a degree in music at Winthrop College and obtained a masters degree from Clemson University. Upon graduation, she began a teaching career in Greenwood School District 50 before coming to District One in 1971, where she secured a position at Williamston Elementary School. After one year in fourth grade, Mrs. Upton moved to the high school level, providing choral programs for both Palmetto and Wren High Schools for 11 years. In 1983, she was named choral director at Wren High, where she remained for her final two years of teaching. In 1985, Mrs. Upton left to pursue a CPA license, and now after seven years, co-owns, with her husband, Upton & Upton, CPA, where she serves as president. In addition to 40 years as a church music director, Mrs. Upton has served on District One's Board of Trustees for the past 26 years where she has assumed leadership roles as secretary and currently vice chairman along with representing the district as vice chairman on the Career & Technology Center Board for the past 17 years. During her years of board service, Mrs. Upton has pushed for strong academic and related arts opportunities to include the recent addition of the district's strings program. "It is gratifying to see our young people prosper from the learning opportunities they receive in District One. Whether it's watching CTC students enter the work force as trained technicians or seeing students I have taught come to District One as teachers and administrators, it's these kind of experiences that reaffirm my commitment to public education." Mrs. Upton and her husband Mike have five grandchildren, with three of them attending schools in Anderson School District One.
